My statement today shall focus on the rights of Macedonian national minority of Greece. In line with Greek nationalist ideology, successive Greek governments have failed to acknowledge the existence of a distinct Macedonian ethnic identity and Macedonian language. The attitude of Greek authorities to the very concept of minority rights deserves particular attention.

One of the basic demands of the Macedonian minority is to have the right to use traditional place names and have their first name and surname in their own language recognized by the state.

This morning I would like to make the following statement on physiological torture and intimidation carried out by Bulgarian authorities against members of the United Macedonian Organisation "Ilinden” PIRIN. As you heard yesterday, in 2005 the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the banning of OMO "Ilinden” PIRIN was a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights.
