Macedonian Billboard Companies Afraid of Repercussions from the Government If They Run MHRMI Campaign Demanding the Reversal of the Forced Name Change
When Macedonian Human Rights Movement International launched billboards (photo 1, 2, 3) demanding an end to Zoran Zaev's illegal and traitorous attempts at forcibly changing Macedonia's name, the US-backed regime immediately ordered their removal with the threat of imprisonment and other consequences for disobedience. However, despite complying with the orders and removing the billboards, companies were still hit with major fines, investigations, and intensified threats and intimidation. Background information on the forced name change is available here.
Upon its election in 2024, the VMRO-DPMNE led government obeyed —and continues to obey —US orders to not take action to reverse the illegal name change. The simple act of annulling the illegal law would align with Macedonian and international law, the UN charter, and multiple international human rights conventions —all of which were blatantly violated while the name change was imposed.
Macedonian Human Rights Movement International's ongoing campaign and demand for the return of Macedonia's name include billboards exposing VMRO-DPMNE's refusal to follow Macedonian and international law, but companies are afraid of repercussions from the government if they run the campaign.
The current Macedonian government appears to have resorted to Zaev regime tactics —the very tactics it condemned while campaigning against them. Such actions will only result in MHRMI continuing to expose those who violate Macedonians' rights, as the former Zaev regime knows all too well.
Posters have since spread throughout Macedonia demanding the return of Macedonia's name, as Macedonians refuse to succumb to threats.MHRMI calls on billboard companies to show the same courage and stand up for their rights —while having the knowledge that they have the full support of MHRMI if the government takes punitive action against them.
