In August 1903, Macedonian patriots rose against the Ottoman Empire. While they won Macedonian independence for only a limited time, it was clear that Macedonian national consciousness was alive. Today, there is a nonsensical "dispute" about the same land, as Greece denies the right of the Republic of Macedonia to call itself by that name.
