Voskopoulos: Verdict is small window towards true democracy
The Thessaloniki court ruling on two journalists is a small window towards true democracy in Greece, Pavle Voskopoulos, Rainbow party leadership member, told Makfax news agency. Two Greek journalists were found guilty of slander and were sentenced to five months suspended prison term. Dimitris Kapsalis, director of Greek national radio, and Kokos Telemahos, journalist at the national radio, were convicted over libel dated from 2005. The two journalists described Voskopoulos as "Skopje's agent", "anti-Greek mercenary" and "separatist".
"The attitude of a country towards human rights and ethnic minority rights reflects not only at political level but also through the implementation of political decisions given that the mode of handling a trial is an important segment in the organization of a state. The mode of conducting a trial shows the level of democracy in a state. Given that the "independent judiciary: in Greece indirectly and directly follows the political ideology in terms of minority rights, the verdict of Thessaloniki court could be called as a small window towards a true democracy," Voskopoulos said.
Voskopoulos, leading figure in Rainbow, a political party of Macedonian minority in Greece, filed the lawsuit against the two journalists in 2007.
