Racism Macedonian Human Rights Movement International (MHRMI) - Press Release

Toronto, Canada - Macedonian Human Rights Movement International (MHRMI) condemns Greece’s continued state-sponsored racism against ethnic Macedonians, even those who were born in Canada. Recently, the Greek Consulate in Toronto made clear its position that it only helps “proud citizens of Greece”, and not people from “Skopje” 1

Nick Grozdanovski, a Canadian-Macedonian, recently tried to re-claim misappropriated property in Greece. His mother, Ioanna Grozdanovski, passed away in 2006 and left all of her assets to her children. A Greek citizen produced a fake will and claimed all the property and according to Greek records, Mrs. Grozdanovski was never married, never had any children, and is still living.

The Grozdanovski family went to the Greek Consulate in Toronto for assistance but were told that all documents with the word “Macedonia” on them would be considered “illegitimate” because Greece refuses to recognize the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia.

The Consulate demanded that the Grozdanovski family change their birth certificates and other documents to say “FYROM” (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) instead of Macedonia. Without this change, Greece would refuse to recognize Mrs. Grozdanovski’s death, and would dishonour her will.

This latest act by the Greek Consulate follows decades of keeping records of Canadian-Macedonians’ activities and reporting them to the Greek government, in order to build their notorious blacklist. Canadian citizens who are active in Macedonian organizations have been stripped of all their property and citizenship in Greece, and are prohibited from entering the country.

Because of the nonsensical name dispute initiated by Greece, Macedonians throughout the world are being discriminated against. MHRMI calls on the international community to force Greece to immediately end its persecution of ethnic Macedonians and to finally recognize its large Macedonian minority.

Referring to Macedonians as being from “Skopje” (Macedonia’s capital) or as “Skopjans” are highly derogatory terms used by Greece to negate the ethnic identity of Macedonians and evokes Greece’s horrific campaigns, past and present, at ethnically cleansing or forcibly assimilating its large Macedonian minority.
