Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Announces Free Return of Macedonian Political Refugees
Macedonian political refugees (known as the Detsa Begaltsi or child refugees), were evacuated from Greece during the Civil War of 1946-49 and have consistently been denied entry into Greece simply because they assert their Macedonian ethnic identity. Former child refugees who assert a Greek identity have been allowed to return to Greece.
ECRI Meeting with Macedonian Organizations in Bulgaria
On May 7, 2003, in Sofia, Bulgaria, activists of the Macedonian organizations in the Pirin part of Macedonia had a meeting with the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) [www.coe.int/ecri]. ECRI is an independent human rights monitoring mechanism, which was established by the first "Summit of Heads of State and Government of the member States of the Council of Europe" (October 1993).

Another Canadian-Macedonian Denied Entry into Greece
The Macedonian Human Rights Movement of Canada (MHRMC) has learned that Mendo Petrevski, a Canadian citizen of Macedonian descent, was denied entry into Greece on May 30, 2002. This is the third documented incident in 2002 of a Canadian citizen being refused entry into Greece simply because of their ethnic background.

Macedonian Minority Organization OMO Ilinden Intimidated by Bulgarian Police at Macedonian Commemoration
On Saturday, July 27, OMO Ilinden, a Macedonian minority organization in Bulgaria, gathered at King Samuel's fortress near the town of Petrich in order to commemorate the 99th anniversary of the Ilinden uprising (Macedonian uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1903). Approximately 1,500 people attended the ceremony, which included speeches and Macedonian music and dances.
