MHRMC Response to Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) Article "Bulgaria's Warm Embrace"

Dear Sirs/Mesdames,

We read with interest your recent story on Macedonia's relationship with Bulgaria ("Bulgaria's Warm Embrace”, 01/24/05). However, instead of finding a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between these two countries, this article simply espoused the decades-old propaganda that Macedonians are "originally Bulgarian”. This and other historical inaccuracies in the article undermine the journalistic neutrality that we would have thought the IWPR would consider essential to its credibility. We are shocked that the IWPR would publish such an article.

Furthermore, a crucial aspect of the relationship between the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria was completely ignored - the documented persecution of Bulgaria's large ethnic Macedonian minority (see and One of IWPR's objectives reads "By training reporters, facilitating dialogue and providing reliable information, it supports peace, democracy and development in societies undergoing crisis and change.” Unfortunately, "Bulgaria's Warm Embrace” falls well-short of aiding these laudable goals due its dubious credibility.
