The man whose job was to change my people's name, erase our identity and rewrite our history is now – in a brutally ironic twist of fate – watching his people's history being changed and the human rights abuses that they suffered be whitewashed, all in the name of politics and as a direct result of his actions.

[Insert derogatory name here]. You’d be immediately, and rightfully, condemned for being racist and spreading hatred. But not if you insert the latest derogatory name for my ethnic group. Actually, you’ll be congratulated for helping to “solve a diplomatic dispute” by spreading hatred against us.   Yeah. That’s right.   I’ve heard them all. I’ve been called a ___, a ___, and a ___ (and so much more). But there’s no condemnation. There is intolerance though, towards us, for being offended and for standing up against hatred.   And it’s all because one of our oppressors managed to convince the most powerful countries in the world to side with them in their claim that our existence is a “diplomatic dispute” that needs to be “solved”.

If one believed the UN’s rhetoric (and ridiculous "#StandUp4HumanRights" hashtag), one would expect the UN to denounce, not assist, Greece in its quest to annihilate the existence of Macedonians’ ethnic identity. But both ended up getting their wish —Macedonia’s name was forcibly and illegally changed, using brutal tactics, and despite mass opposition by the Macedonian people.

We all respond in a crisis. We all respond when someone is in need. But how about when your entire ethnic group is in need? Other groups respond vocally and immediately. But do Macedonians? Unless Trump and his enablers prevent it, Joe Biden will become president and he will Make America Normal Again — for America. The world will continue to suffer. Following the lead of fellow EU member-state Greece, which imposed its own demands on Macedonia including the forced name change, Bulgaria is demanding that Macedonia and Macedonians rewrite their history, change their identity, declare that they are “originally Bulgarian", that their language is a "Bulgarian dialect" and completely abandon the Macedonian minority in Bulgaria. Moreover, and also contrary to all historical facts, it demands that Macedonia formally accept Bulgaria's revisionist history that Bulgaria, an ally of Hitler and the occupying power in Macedonia, was "not responsible for the deportation of over 7,000 Macedonian Jews to the Treblinka death camp". If these demands aren't met, Bulgaria pledged to veto Macedonia's EU membership bid. EU Spokesperson Ana Pisonero responded:

Macedonian Human Rights Movement International condemns the continued persecution and intimidation of journalists in the Republic of Macedonia. Critics of the Zoran Zaev regime continually face threats and criminal proceedings, including Aleksandar Mitovski, editor of the Infomax news site. Mitovski was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended over two years, for publishing key – and public – witness testimony in a racketeering scandal involving Zaev. 

Macedonian Human Rights Movement International President Bill Nicholov met with David Sproule and Andrew Turner, the Director General and Deputy Director of European and Eurasian Affairs for Global Affairs Canada, and called for Canada to immediately reverse its ill-advised support of the forced name change of the Republic of Macedonia. Nicholov noted that Canada's policy of “Euro-Atlantic integration” cannot be pursued at the expense of human rights, international law, and the human rights conventions to which Canada is a signatory.

Macedonian Human Rights Movement International calls on Macedonian-Canadians to join our support of Dan Masin, a proud Macedonian-Canadian, who is seeking candidacy in the Ontario riding of Simcoe North. Masin is running for the nomination in the Conservative Party of Canada, but MHRMI stresses that we are supporting Dan Masin as an individual, and reiterate our position that any political party that wants support from Macedonians must clearly support Macedonia's name and our Macedonian identity first.
